denial is my favorite place.

so it really isn’t new information – but i have a toddler. since her first birthday i have been firmly planted in denial land, only letting the word itself slip on rare occasions, still calling her a baby the majority of the time. in fact, one time i claimed i would never call her a toddler until 3 things happened: she walked, she bit me, and she smeared her poop all over the wall during a nap or something. apparently my pre-req’s were dumb because she only does one (walk, duh) but she is undoubtedly, officially, no looking back – a toddler.

exhibit A: SHE IS HUGE.

the first thing i noticed about this photo was how grown up she looks. sure, she has the binkie, and chubby toes – but she also has a ponytail (not PIGGY, PONY, as in ONE) and just looks…big. she is finally almost caught up to her size in clothes, and a week or so ago at target, a dad with a 6 year old and a babyseat in tow looked at me and said “20 months?”. i was both very impressed and very excited that my little nugget (once mistaken for a little person at the park – no i’m not kidding) finally looked her age! how exciting. and sad.

exhibit B : her attitude.

i don’t have a photo of this. i don’t want a photo of this. people are always surprised when i say H has a strong personality or can throw a mean tantrum. i suppose she saves all that for me? she is getting very opinionated, she knows exactly what she likes and what she doesn’t and her new “thing” is testing us. oh you don’t want me to touch that? i’m gonna touch it and look you straight in the eye to see what your plan is. oh you don’t have one? that’s what i thought, IMBECILES. this is where we need to get all supernanny soon because a naughty spot is now necessary. like, very necessary. if you’d like to send sedatives or xanax (for me, obv) for the next year or so, please email me for my mailing address.

exhibit C: WTHair?

i just…i don’t even know where this hair came from. all of a sudden i’m like brushing this child’s hair. do babies need their hair brushed? no they do not. because it is not long and flowy and curly. but toddlers? their hair is. oy vey.

exhibit D: she brings the fun.

i think i say this at every juncture, but this age, even with all the whining and tantrums and testing, is so! freaking! fun! i did adore her when she was a fat chunk who sat on a blanket in the middle of the room and gummed a teether whilst trying to not bobble her head, but this? this is awesome. nothing beats hearing “luh you mommy!” and going to the park and sharing a snack and reading books and watching her understand. we color, we play with puzzles, we run, we tell jokes (well i fart, she laughs and says “poop!”) (wow i just shared that with the interwebs, moving on?), we put things away in baskets, we dance. it’s amazing. she is amazing. i do wish i could freeze this age…but since i always say that, i’m assuming even more amazingness is right around the corner.

post summary: my made up prerequisites for things are dumb. kids do what they want. like grow up or whatever.

thanks for continuing to give us a click! i love you like iced coffee and narwhals. and pugs and peep toe heels. and johnny depp and squishy baby knees. and pho! I LOVE YOU LIKE WOAH is what i’m saying here.

Now that you mention it… holy cow she HAS grown!

I've only been reading the haps since about January or so, and Harper has grown so much since even then! My bestie watches a 2.5 year old, and he is ridiculously fun… so expect more of that fun, adorable, attitude-y, lovey toddler time. Harper already seems like the awesomest (yes, yes I did just use that pretend, grammatically incorrect word) kid ever, so I can't wait to see what "firsts" she has next!

And yes. Denial. J will be 11 months in two days. I refuse to believe that means he'll be one in a month.

Oh I can SO SO relate to the attitude and the understanding parts and how terrible/wonderful they are. Like "Oh I totally understand I'm not supposed to lick the dog but YOU'RE not going to stop me so I'm gonna see how much hair I can get in my mouth before you actually come over here".

Don't worry, I hear denial is lovely this time of years. Lots of pho.

I've been following you since you started your blog and I have loved watching Harper grow. She just LOOKS like she is full of spunk and would be extremely entertaining. She's definitley a toddler now, but she gets cuter and cuter and more fun to read about :)

This post makes me excited and scared for what is to come. I can't believe my Abigail will be 9 months in a couple weeks…that means closer to one! GAH! Please tell me it slows down at some point?

how do you get her to keep the pony in? Every time I put a pony in Emilia's hair she immediately pulls it out! So annoying!

Attitude and all, the fun will just keep on coming.

i usually use the tiny tiny little rubber bands (they're like the size of a cheerio but stretchy). i don't do it too often, because she rarely will sit still for it, but those work well when we do manage to get one in.

My daughter walks & bites my knees. You've never been knee bitten? Well, you're just missing out. Because knee biting is the bee's knee's.

No it's not. And I'm tired. Obviously.

Bitten knee's sorta make me look like a knee junky. It leaves little red marks all over my knee's like I'm looking for a good spot or something.

Oh yeah. Exchange adorable girl toddler for adorable boy toddler and this is exactly what’s happening over here. And despite the random tantrums and ‘not this one mommy!’ to certain songs on the radio, this age is crazy fun. Insane crazy good times.

I totally hear you. My daughter A is 19 months and nobody believes me when I say she throw a BAD tantrum. Only fo me I guess…. If she doesn't get to do exactly what her brother is doing (4.5 yo), she is pissed. Must get it from her Dad (or NOT, it is SO me). I also covet H's hair, A only has wisps….. I do agree with the fun though. I am amazed every day as to how much she understands when I talk to her. Fun to see H close to the same place as A.

First, that hair is too gorgeous! Im actually jealous of a childs hair ;)

Second, I totally agree with you about this being the most fun age. the personality and sense of humour just is started to shine through and the finally understand what we're telling them. Now, they definatly don't always listen but its a start :)

I started time outs with Lucy at 18 months and the threat of time out totally works 90% of the time! It's obviously hard to start with but I find it works so well after a while.

And she's gorgeous. Are you still a mom that says… my child is 22 months old instead of saying… my child is almost 2 years old? Lol… I love having kids.
