high on thrifting {part deux}

Posted on | July 20, 2010 | 27 Comments

yesterday i left goodwill very few dollars lighter and with a few super awesome things. i will never get sick of looking for cute stuff with potential in a sea of well, gross stuff with no potential. my possibly favorite find was this little wooden deer statue (or as kenny called it, “oddly-long-necked/long-legged-bunny”, which i suppose i cannot argue with). i snatched it up so fast, because seriously, what was this precious thing doing here? how has no one taken it? HAVE PEOPLE NO TASTE? anywho, i adore it. i was going to leave it be, but all i could see in my mind was him being turquoise. so turquoise he became.

the cute little yellow balls on sticks? i got that inspiration from my friend Morgan over at mrs. priss. only i could not find the balls pre-packaged anywhere, so i bought some silk floral crap that had them on the branches and sprayed them with a bit of yellow spray paint, then jammed them on wooden kebab sticks. TA NA! of course, i put them in one of my many milk glass vases, because like i’ve said before, OBSESSED.

i also picked up this old frame and decided it would be a perfect home for some of my necklaces. since i had the turquoise paint out and i love the color unreasonable amounts, i did it the same color. i’m pretty happy with how it came out, and i’m going to keep my eye out for more frames and things for the rest of my giant necklace collection. wouldn’t it be cute to make a little frame collage?

lastly, i scored this little chair and side desk for the H monster for $3.99. she absolutely LOVES it. she sits in it and reads books and eats snacks and exclaims “CHAIR!”. i’m glad she likes it because i literally sanitized the thing within an inch of it’s plastic life. i could do without the same songs and sayings as every fisher price toy we have, but that is what on-off buttons are for right? and if necessary, removal of batteries. because really? WE GET THAT IT’S LEARNING TIME.

the moral of the story? thrifting owns mah face. i can never quit you, goodwill. even with the mouth breathing, really old people milling about and the whatnot, you own my face FOREVER.

AGH. They turned out so cute in that little white vase! I found a few vases just like that while thrifting a few weeks ago and now I'm completely obsessed with getting my hands on any sort of little white vase I can. Adorable.

LOVE the frame with the necklaces. such a good idea!! And Harper's ponytail is killing me. And this is the most ridiculous comment ever. <3

I love your posts, your daughter & her pony, and all the fab finds you get from goodwill! I can never seem to find things nearly as cute… Funny that you mentioned you got H’s new chair there b/c I was wondering where you got it (I want one!) and didn’t see it at Target any time recently!

For the Turquoise, did you use spray paint or brush paint? (And why did I just capitalize turquoise?

brush paint. it took about 3 coats for each, but spray painting is so messy, i didn't mind.

I want to be the new voice of Fisher Price. They need a new woman singing the ABC's because I'm about to find her and knock her out for being inside EVERY TOY.
I love Kenny! I love turquoise! I love frames! I love your face!

Ugh turquoise is my most favorite colour especially with coral. Love how you can see potential is something others (including me) can't.

    Awesome ideas!

Love the deer! Seriously, who gave that up and why are they such an idiot?

I would like to state for the record you totally stole that necklace frame idea from me, as I did it like two years ago and posted a picture of it in my Twitter Home Tour which I KNOW you spend all day stalking just so you can steal my genius home decor ideas. Hooker. I mean, how could anyone POSSIBLY come up with such a brilliant idea on their own? Because there is no way I totally stole it from a magazine. No way.

I love it! I need a thrifting buddy to teach me how to do it – all I ever see is crap. And then my mouthbreathing gives out and I leave.

My daughter has that same chair. My aunt brought it over one day because her grandkids were too big for it, and Evie just loves it. I agree with the "it's learning time!" statement with my entire being.

I love the turquoise frames! And you did it so amazingly they almost look professionally done. And using them for your necklace collection? B-r-i-l-l-i-a-n-t. I've been looking for ways on how to organize/store/display necklaces awhile back. And your idea beats the dull steel bar and S hooks crap by a long mile. Thanks a lot! Love it. Love it.

I assume that took a lot of cleaning and sanitizing too. What did you use to clean the frames (And the "Chair!" as well)? 'Coz I don't want to use something that might end up ruining the nice design (if not burn a hole through entirely!)
