Mama Style {Dear Baby}

Posted on | February 4, 2011 | 27 Comments

happy friday! i’ve been having fun doing my mama style posts – so much so that i thought i’d ask some of my favorite bloggers and style inspire-ers to join in. steppin’ out saturday has been so awesome – seeing lots of mamas show off their style and prove that motherhood doesn’t have to ruin your style (it just changes it a bit!) has been inspiring for me. i hope it has been for you, too! and i hope seeing these pretty mamas and their daily style (plus answers to a few questions!) over the weeks does the same.

first up is a friend, a lovely blogger, a gorgeous mama to Everly and is adorably pregnant with little Arlo. i have no doubt you already know Melissa. she shares her life, love story and family with us over at Dear Baby. be sure to stop by and say hello to her and if you’ve never been, hopefully you have a cup of coffee and some time – you’ll be there for a while!

how has your style changed since becoming a mom? I’ve tried to maintain my pre-baby style as much as possible but there have definitely been some changes. I find myself purchasing fewer heels and more wedges and flats. I give my husband a heart attack every time I teeter around in high heels with our one year old daughter on my hip – and since I am notoriously klutzy, I’ve come to accept that for my children’s safety and my own, stable footwear is a good idea.

Also, wearing anything that requires more care than a washer and dryer is completely out of the question for me. Dry Cleaners? Who has time for that? I laugh in the face of ironing. If it’s not wash and wear, it’s no longer in my closet.

One thing I should probably give up, but can’t, is little dresses. Dresses that are wee bit too short for all the bending over I have to do to wipe boogery noses and scrape half eaten cheerios out of the carpet. But I love them and am forever perfecting my squat and bend technique so that I can have my dresses and wear them too.

if you’re having a particularly crazy day, what is the beauty/style step you absolutely will not skip? Under eye concealer. I may be in yoga pants and my husband’s sweatshirt. I may have even forgotten to brush my hair. But I’ll be damned if you’re gonna catch me out and about with dark circles under my eyes.

have you ever been mistaken for the nanny? Hahaha. No. And I’m a bit surprised I haven’t considering I’m pale with green eyes and my daughter has olive skin and dark brown eyes. I do get the question “Who does she look like?” which really means “Clearly she doesn’t look like you.”

piece of advice for new moms who don’t want to give up their style? I struggle to answer this because I don’t consider myself a fashion expert. I’m constantly trying to figure out what to wear and how to wear it and feel like I’m still in the process of evolving my style.

What I do know – a good pair of jeans and a rockin’ pair of leopard print flats have saved me again and again on mornings when I was too busy to think about putting together an outfit. Every new mom should own at least one flowy dress that makes you feel incredibly feminine and pretty. And a brightly colored scarf can make even the most boring outfit interesting.

Also – who says you have to give up your maternity jeans after the baby is born? Not me, as long as they’re flattering, wear those bad boys as long as you want, honey. I’m not ashamed to admit I love elastic waistbands, not one bit.

thanks so much Melissa! see you guys sunday morning for SOS. have an amazing weekend!

    Melissa looks fabulous! I need to get me some skinny maternity jeans.

    I have to say, being pregnant makes me want to dress up more. I feel so much more confident than I ever have pre-pregnancy. I’ve yet to rock the frumpy pregnancy look.

    wow, what great style. something i’ve been thinking about is that taking a little black dress and pairing it with everything black {tights, boots/shoes} and a POP of color, like a scarf or necklace/earrings, like she said. love her mama style, BTW!
