yep. i’m a sap.
i like to celebrate half birthdays. especially Harper’s, because she is only little once. soon these 6 month increments will be trumped by years and damnit, i want to relish them while they last. besides? i love a reason to make cupcakes.
friday marked the H monster’s big one point five. she wore an adorable lil’ gap dress and we bought her the tiniest ever kitchen set to play with until we have room to make her a real, kick ace play kitchen. she absolutely loves it, and cooked us up some eggs and toast. it’s incredible to see her pretend to do things, like cook, eat, and give us “tastes” of her food she just “made”. her brain is going faster than my heart would like it to, but this age is really so much fun.
not cute. at all.
she had her 18 month well visit with dr. lavinder last monday. she was very impressed with H and how she is doing, especially in the vocab department. she asked me if i thought H knew 5 words. i said, “yeah probably more like 15″ to which she was very impressed. out of curiosity when we returned home, i wrote them down – over 35. and seriously, since that day? i swear she has learned at least 5 more. some of her new favorites are “please” (wahoo!), “banana”, “juice”, “it’s good!”, “cheese” (for the camera, so cute!), “brush” (she knows her toothbrush and hairbrush), and “yes”. up until recently, it was always “yeah”, but she has started saying yes, which is very cute.
she knows where her nose, eyes, ears and belly are, and can say and point to each one. she knows a duck quacks, a cow moos and a doggie says ruff ruff. basically every day she amazes us with something new. she is still chillin’ in size 3 diapers, but i’m happy to say, with the exception of one pair of 9 month jammies, she is in all 12 month clothes now (yay!). oh, before i forget, here are her stats at 18 months:
height – 31 inches (25th %)
weight – 22 pounds (20th %)
noggin – 18.75 inches (50th)
so friday evening was spent playing and lounging, we sang happy half birthday to her because that’s what we do and there were cupcakes. yummy evil cupcakes.
one and a half cupcakes
i am constantly in awe of this little person. she is so smart, so funny, so lovable. she is getting to be very independent, which brings the un-fun side of toddlerhood sometimes. but what she lacks in patience, she makes up for in personality. she is the best thing i have ever done.

holy cow, what the crap is going on?
Harper is 16 months old today! well, i mean, she would be if today was february 31st, but it’s not and never will be, so today? today she is 16 months old. it seems i was just in denial about her becoming a toddler, but you guys? there is no denying it anymore. this kid is kissing her babyhood goodbye before our eyes in everything she does. at 16 months old, Harper continues to amaze us in the following ways:
- speech: if you couldn’t tell by her use of a three syllable word in the previous post, the girl can talk. her new favorites this past month include: alright!, woah!, tickle tickle, no (with head shake. sigh.), high fi! (while holding hand up for high five), YAY! (while clapping wildly) and of course, the ever famous icicle bicycle. also she loves saying go-key, which we’ve established either means food or drink.
- skillz: no need for a roomba when you have Harper around. she literally sees and picks up tiny tiny specks of stuff (uh, cat hair, dirt, etc) and politely brings them to us without putting them in her mouth. this is huge. she knows what many things are and can bring us things when we ask for them (do you want more milk? bring me your cup and she finds it [amongst her toys] and hands it over). she is getting good at putting things into things, and immediately claps and yells YAY when she fits something in the right place.
- fud: a few months ago, i was crying weekly at mealtime. she wouldn’t eat anything and threw her food on the floor. Scot would come home and i would be crying in the kitchen because i was so. dang. frustrated. like everything else, this was just a phase (cue angels singing “thank gawd”). now she is eating like a champ and is even eating things she used to gag on, like green veggies. she is loving any and all varieties of morning star farms products, peaches, bananas, noodles, cottage cheese, yogurt, pears, bananas, carrots, peas, all cheeses and for peets sake the child is obsessed with yogurt melts.
- she is still wearing size 3 diapers (i do not see this changing anytime soon, the size 4′s go almost to her nipples, it’s actually pretty funny…) and is almost out of the 9 months clothes. most of her day to day wear is 12 monthers now, except her pants. poor little lady got some stubby gams.
- sense of humor: again, showcased in the last video (where if you notice – she actually scoffs at me). Harper knows what is funny, and to her that is most everything. Stella and Lulu kissing her? funny. farts? hilarious. kitty scratching mommy’s favorite rug? a knee slapper. she makes her self cough sometimes from laughing so much.

today, we took Harper to red robin for lunch. what better place to take kids? Scot and i would seek refuge there when H was tiny, because no one gave a crap if our baby was screaming or fussing, because someone elses monster was always making a bigger scene. not to mention, who can hear anything over them singing that damn birthday song 6 hundred times over the course of one cheeseburger?
anywho, it was crazy because she got a kids menu and crayons. she colored and ate mac and cheese and it felt like holy crap she isn’t a baby. she’s a little kid. SOB. (omg, not s.o.b. – like SOB, i’m crying. calling my kid and sob would just be mean). we also went to get a new baby gate because TRUE STORY we were still using the one i bought to contain stella (our pug) to the kitchen like 5 years ago. you know, the plastic old ones that you have to step over or completely remove? after countless trips, knees bashed into walls and many, many swear words, we decided to be real parents and buy one that GASP swings open. i might marry it. and please save your “omg what were you waiting for you crazy lady” comments for someone else. because I DON”T KNOW.
so. we now have the proper gate to contain a real, live and in the flesh TODDLER.

post summary: Harper ages too fast. she is in fact a toddler. she is smart and cute and no, you cannot have her.

in this vid, you’ll hear Harper pant like a doggy, growl like a gremlin (seriously my favorite ever), dancy dance, and wave bye bye. she was busy!

Harper had her 9 month appointment with Dr. Lavinder yesterday. i was beyond stoked to hear she didn’t have to have any shots! she was in a great mood, dancing and waving her arms wildly for the nurses, eliciting many comments of how lucky i am to have such an easygoing baby. word!
Dr. Lavinder says she is doing perfect. she is still right on track with everything. she said her weight is low for her age, but that is normal for the 9 month mark – with less formula and more movement. but she looks fine to me…more than fine :] so here are the stats:
weight : 18lb 5oz
height : 27 3/4 inches
noggin : 18 inches
i almost cried making her 1 year appointment. it just doesn’t seem right! this morning she was sitting in her highchair telling me a story (yeah it’s jibberish, but if you heard it, it sounds like she is really saying something) and feeding herself puffs. i was just looking at her like “who are you?”.
in my old lady voice: “they grow up so fast”.

keep looking »
