High on Thrifting Thursday

Posted on | February 9, 2012 | 54 Comments

fellow thrifting addicts and mouth breathers: it’s time to unite. time to bond over stories of treasures found, hand sanitizer used and grandma skirts scored. i’ve been tossing this idea around for a while, and finally got off my arse and got it ready. if you guys enjoy it and find it useful or fun, i’d love to make it a weekly or bi-monthly link up partay.

it’s no secret that thrifting is one of my favorite things to do. i hit up second hand stores weekly in search of cheap wares. thrifting is my happy place. give me a big iced coffee, a tiny shopping partner sufficiently loaded up with books and snacks, and you have a recipe for a very happy Mandy. i know lots of you also love the thrill of the thrift, and many of you have told me you’d love to start. feel free to share your latest finds (my plan), tips and tricks, past finds, your favorite places to go, etc. there is no format and really no rules. i mean, besides the fact that your post needs to have to do with thrifting, obviously. so let’s give this a shot.

besides, the acronym for High on Thrifting Thursday is HOTT. and that is just funny.

these are my recent finds! the horse painting might be my favorite. i’m on a mission to make a gallery wall of awesomeness in our living room and this bad boy is so invited to that party. the yellow painting will live in H’s room most likely – i love how happy it is. i also found her a new pair of boots, a little pheasant to sit on my dresser, and a knit blanket in the perfect shade of blue. the floral thing is actually a skirt – it’s too big but hi, it was 99 cents and i will either alter it or use the fabric for something else. my fave little find is the letter holder – leather with gold triangles? gimme.

for those of you still unsure about thrifting, here are some of my past posts with my tips and tricks.

>> why i buy secondhand (and you should, too!).
>> some tips for thrifting
>> vintage dresses – before and afters

also, you can click the “thrifting” tab up at the top of the blog and see any posts about things i’ve thrifted. dude, let’s say the word thrift a few more times.

if you have a blog and post about thrifting, feel free to link a recent post here – and if you don’t have a blog but you have a tip, story, etc about thrifting (your favorite find?), feel free to leave it in the comments! i want this to be fun and helpful. also, if you have any questions or things you’d like to be covered in the future should we continue (oh i hope so!), let me know below.

feel free to grab a button for your post as well. happy thrifting!

A pretty rad Wednesday.

today was a good day. i didn’t even have to use my a-k.

but seriously, playdate! consignment shopping! cocoa! let’s try to forget the fact that one of the dogs (the one that can SEE) decided to eat cat poop in front of our guests and my child has become the worlds worst listener in the history of non-listeners (toddlers are small terrorists, i tell you that with complete certainty)(also, please pass some wine). yes, let us forget those things and focus on five dollar pink minnetonka mocs and furry jackets, shall we now?

it’s safe to say i am jealous of both.

fiona took some adorable photos of the girls on our stop for cocoa. hide yo ovaries, hide yo…ovaries again.

fiona? she has the mad photo skillz. this one is just begging to be in a frame. and i shall grant its wish!

the best part about this photo (as if you could pick one) is that the horse wasn’t even going.

Harper’s Room

Posted on | November 7, 2011 | 76 Comments

Harper’s “big girl” room is a constant work in progress because she’s always growing, changing, and i’m always finding new things to put in there. but it’s finally at a point where i wanted to share it with you guys and show you how we have redecorated her nursery as she got older with very minimal moola involved. i may have about three trillion photos, so i’ve enlisted the ever so helpful “read more” option on this post only so this post doesn’t eat my entire front page and force people to scroll for days. if you want to see the whole post, be sure to click through!

before Harper was born, we created a pretty pink and brown nursery for her, and i loved it. but as she got older, i wanted something a bit more colorful – a really fun place she could play in and let her imagination run wild. as the space evolved, we kept coming up with things to add – like a reading area, and a chalk board – so that her room was the perfect place for a three year old to do her thang.

thrifting and keeping many of the original elements of the room (paint, furniture, etc.) kept the cost way down. you’ll see as we go along how much of the goodies in here were bought second hand. what can i say – i have a problem!

shall we begin?

Burning questions, answered.

last week i posted on the facebook page (you’re there, right?) that we’d be doing a vlog answering some questions from you guys. we have admittedly not done said vlog yet. and tonight when the mood to do that struck me? it was dark, the kiddo was asleep and me, well i had ice cream (ben and jerry’s coffee toffee crunch, because, obviously) crusted to the corners of my mouth. which sounds hot, but i assure you it isn’t.

so while i will save some of them for a future vlog (especially Harper’s), i thought i’d answer some of them here. it’s sure to be riveting.

::side eye::

which store is your favorite to shop that has new stuff, besides Target. That’s a given, right? ;)
it is a given. i also really love h&m (for the whole family), forever 21 (i know i’m 30 but really, whatever. also, it’s a good place to try trends without spending a lot.) and nordstrom. if i’m near LOFT, i always check the sale racks because i love LOFT but won’t pay full price there. i’m cheap. that is apparent.

how is Harper liking preschool? she absolutely loves it. the week before she went i was questioning myself all over the place but holy cow are we so happy we chose this for her. she is completely enamored with everything about it, including her teachers and new friends. she comes home singing songs and talking about all these new things and pretty much blowing our minds. i can’t say enough good things about this experience so far! she just loves it and i’m so proud of her. /gushing

What’s the best thrift store? The place you find the most treasures.
the person asking this question is local to me (hi lindsy!) so i will share my faves in the south sound. my favorite goodwills are the one on 38th and the one on 72nd. the st. vincent de paul on pacific has really good stuff, and i always seem to find the best treasures there. i hit up value village off 72nd once in a blue moon, but their prices are pretty ridiculous, so it’s not a favorite of mine. viva la thrifting!

How did you come up with the name Harper? How long have you known your husband? How did you meet?
Piper was our number one name for a long time, then Scot found Harper in the baby name book and he was hooked. i loved it as well, and at the time it wasn’t common (it’s gaining popularity) so it fit our criteria (naming babies with another human being is really hard). i still love Piper but Piper is pretty close to Harper so we wouldn’t name another daughter Piper. so we passed the name off to Mae and Christopher. true story.

Scot and i have known each other for a little over 6 years and have been married for 5. here is a fun post that explains everything.

how is potty training going (or not going) for Harper? if it’s working well, care to share your secret? emilia laughs in the face of potty training & i am getting sick & tired of buying diapers.
girl, solidarity. potty training is the most un-fun part of parenting we’ve come across thus far. we have made progress and we’ve stepped backwards. it’s been hard and confusing and lots of other adjectives (and expletives). in the next week or two, we are gonna be hunkering down and doing this ish and i will be posting about it shortly after success. which we will have. at some point. before college. ::cry laughs::

what are some of Harpers favorite books?
right now, her favorite book is Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse!

so i’m really curious about all the rain and how you deal.  it’s so tempting to stay inside when it’s gloomy and seeing as how i think it might be gloomy everyday i think i need to come up with a game plan.  tell me how you spend rainy days.  how do you keep from getting depressed?
this is a really good question. the sad reality is the PNW is gloomy and sad and i am very prone to letting that weather effect me negatively. last year i had a really hard time. this year, even though fall has just begun, i’ve already been planning ways to combat boredom and blues. on the days H isn’t in preschool we do things like go to the library (check if your local one has story/craft time), a local playcenter with friends, and i’ve been pinning crafty ideas like a maniac. i have some fall crafts planned as well as things for handmade christmas gifts and holiday decor. all that combined with preschool, H is gonna be set up for success. as for me not getting bummed, i’ve added some extra vitamins – D and B12 – to my normal multi vitamin to help out. also remembering to do little things for myself – coffee out with a friend, blogging after everyone is in bed, reading, etc – is really important.

when do you plan on having Harper 2.0?
will there be anymore adorable little beings?
but really, are you going for 2?
maybe next year?, yes someday, and not right now.

man, you guys are ruthless.
