yep. i’m a sap.
i like to celebrate half birthdays. especially Harper’s, because she is only little once. soon these 6 month increments will be trumped by years and damnit, i want to relish them while they last. besides? i love a reason to make cupcakes.
friday marked the H monster’s big one point five. she wore an adorable lil’ gap dress and we bought her the tiniest ever kitchen set to play with until we have room to make her a real, kick ace play kitchen. she absolutely loves it, and cooked us up some eggs and toast. it’s incredible to see her pretend to do things, like cook, eat, and give us “tastes” of her food she just “made”. her brain is going faster than my heart would like it to, but this age is really so much fun.
not cute. at all.
she had her 18 month well visit with dr. lavinder last monday. she was very impressed with H and how she is doing, especially in the vocab department. she asked me if i thought H knew 5 words. i said, “yeah probably more like 15″ to which she was very impressed. out of curiosity when we returned home, i wrote them down – over 35. and seriously, since that day? i swear she has learned at least 5 more. some of her new favorites are “please” (wahoo!), “banana”, “juice”, “it’s good!”, “cheese” (for the camera, so cute!), “brush” (she knows her toothbrush and hairbrush), and “yes”. up until recently, it was always “yeah”, but she has started saying yes, which is very cute.
she knows where her nose, eyes, ears and belly are, and can say and point to each one. she knows a duck quacks, a cow moos and a doggie says ruff ruff. basically every day she amazes us with something new. she is still chillin’ in size 3 diapers, but i’m happy to say, with the exception of one pair of 9 month jammies, she is in all 12 month clothes now (yay!). oh, before i forget, here are her stats at 18 months:
height – 31 inches (25th %)
weight – 22 pounds (20th %)
noggin – 18.75 inches (50th)
so friday evening was spent playing and lounging, we sang happy half birthday to her because that’s what we do and there were cupcakes. yummy evil cupcakes.
one and a half cupcakes
i am constantly in awe of this little person. she is so smart, so funny, so lovable. she is getting to be very independent, which brings the un-fun side of toddlerhood sometimes. but what she lacks in patience, she makes up for in personality. she is the best thing i have ever done.

f i haven’t mentioned this before, i have 3 baby books for Harper. each of them have a few things filled out, because i like certain things about one and certain things about another. one actually has a page devoted to your baby’s first night of life. it has spaces for each and every time it woke up and what you did. ha. haha. HAHAHAHAHA. yeah, ok. ’cause that was gonna happen. don’t think H needs to fondly look back on how much percocet i took or number of times i made myself a giant maxi-pad/icepack/tucks/dermaplast diaper (or how many her dad made for me, for that matter).
so anywho, in order to have something to look at to someday complete said baby book(s), all of Harper’s stats go here each dr. visit. today we went to see dr. lavender. she was very impressed with Harper’s vocabulary and social skillz. she exclaimed when she came in that it just couldn’t be Harper’s 15 month appointment yet, it felt like she was just born. i know, right? le sigh.
here be the stats:
weight :: 20 lb 8 oz. – 10th %
height :: 29 inches – 10th%
noggin :: 18.75 inches – 90th %
in other words, she’s a contender for her own TLC show, but has a ginormous brain. i was SO relieved to hear she gained some weight and grew taller because she didn’t grow at all between 9 and 12 months.

here is what H is up to these days:
- wearing size 3 diapers and size 9 – 12 month clothes.
- walking like a champ, and tries to run sometimes. this is not at all terrifying.
- eating all sorts of food. her finickiness has gotten so much better. her faves are garden burgers, cheese, bananas, whole wheat pancakes, peaches, annie’s mac&cheese, carrots and carrot juice.
- is completely drinking whole milk. no more formula.
- says a ton of words. says “hi” to everyone, answers “yeah” to questions, “alright!” when she’s excited, “dadee” to Scot (still doesn’t call me anything, but whatevs), “uh oh” when she drops something, and can still count to two but has seemed to have forgotten three.
- knows what things are. if you ask her to bring you a certain toy, she knows which it is, usually. also loves to share.
- gives awesome kisses and high-fives.
- sleeps like a mad woman. 7:30pm to usually 8am, though she has been known to sleep until 9:30 at times.
- is generally awesomesauce.

since she had to get shots today, the rest of the afternoon will be spent cuddling. although i will admit, she was over it waaaay sooner than i was.

today the nugget had her 12 month well visit. it’s safe to say that she was the only well child there. i don’t think i’ve ever clung to her so hard as i did in that waiting room swarming with infected kids wearing masks and looking miserable. i think i purelled (might have just made up a word) my hands 30 times in the dr.s office. thought about giving H a bath in it even.
dr. lavinder seemed pretty stoked to get away from the sick kids for a while and see “miss harper”. she gave H a book about baby animals and we discussed the h1n1 vaccine. they had gotten it this morning and while i was planning on skipping it, i decided to get it for her because a) they had it and b) dr recommended it and that is why we pay her : to take care of our baby. not to mention seeing all those sick kids and their worried moms. overall, our munchkin is doing amazing and is healthy as can be. here are her stats:
19lb 11oz (25% percentile)
27.75 inches (10% percentile)
18 inch noggin (50% percentile)
after some rather concerned looks from me, she assured me H is doing great. it’s just that her measurments coupled with the fact that she is still sporting 9 month clothes (and seriously, still some 6 monthers) is prolonging my fear of her being some sort of gnome. just kidding. but seriously, we have a little biscuit on our hands!

she did pretty well for most of the visit, though it is getting very hard to keep her in line. she chewed on her shoe for a while, but got pretty irritated that i wouldn’t let her down to play on the swine-flu infected ground. the shots were by far the worst yet, and i can imagine they will only get worse the older she gets. this was the first time she had to be restrained which was really hard for me to be a part of. she got 4 shots and cried the cry where her face turns bright purple and no sound exits the mouth for waaay too long. except this time i had to hold her arms so she wouldn’t try to fight off the nurse so she was looking at me like “whyyyyyyyyyyyy are you doing this to me evil woman, you’re supposed to be my mommmmmmy!!!”. i hope the nurse didn’t see my tears, because she really felt awful already. what a crap job, btw. just shooting kids with needles all day. ugh. luckily she recovered quickly and had a good day of napping and playing with all of her new toys. yay for healthy babies!

Harper had her 9 month appointment with Dr. Lavinder yesterday. i was beyond stoked to hear she didn’t have to have any shots! she was in a great mood, dancing and waving her arms wildly for the nurses, eliciting many comments of how lucky i am to have such an easygoing baby. word!
Dr. Lavinder says she is doing perfect. she is still right on track with everything. she said her weight is low for her age, but that is normal for the 9 month mark – with less formula and more movement. but she looks fine to me…more than fine :] so here are the stats:
weight : 18lb 5oz
height : 27 3/4 inches
noggin : 18 inches
i almost cried making her 1 year appointment. it just doesn’t seem right! this morning she was sitting in her highchair telling me a story (yeah it’s jibberish, but if you heard it, it sounds like she is really saying something) and feeding herself puffs. i was just looking at her like “who are you?”.
in my old lady voice: “they grow up so fast”.
keep looking »
